A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
