One Piece Ends a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every year for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime covering one chapter, with some instead handling more material or additional to make up for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
